Morro bay, the Pacific's rock of Gibraltar

The windward side of this rock attracted surfers, birds and rodents.  The leeward side was soft sand, with people, birdwatchers and the harbor.  The kids were screaming (some with joy, others in pure panic!) as they uncovered small crabs that skittered under rocks and into small tidal pools
The rock is home to peregrine falcons (and they were of course in hiding while we visited!)
I have no idea how the pelicans can see the fish they dive after, but they seem to be successful.

Seagulls are the pigeons of the coasts: they are messy and aggressive.  A sign in the restaurant read, "please don't feed the birds, they'll just crap on you anyway." From the looks of the sidewalks, these critters are well nourished.

Seagulls and ground squirrels seem to be well trained in the beach areas.  These guys will come and beg at your feet.

Call me crazy, but I think fish tastes the best when eaten dockside (and the calamari didn't disappoint either!)
